Back at the precinct, we caught Routman as he was about to leave and gave him a brief rundown of what we’d discovered about the Alchemist, which wasn’t much at this point.

“I can’t ask for a warrant until I have more information,” he said. “You don’t even have a fucking name yet.”

“We’ll have one soon. But I’m telling you, this is our guy, Jim.”

Routman stared at me. “How do you know that, Drake? What are you not telling me?” He leaned forward slightly and sniffed, his face registering his distaste. “And what the fuck is that stench coming off you? You smell like a fucking abattoir, Drake.” He looked at Knight. “And you, Knight.”

“Eh, yeah—” Knight began, grasping for a plausible explanation of why we both smelled like rotten meat.

“Don’t bother, Knight,” Routman said. “I don’t wanna know. It’s my wife’s birthday and we’re going out for a nice meal. I don’t want to be thinking about whatever it is you were going to tell me.”

“All right,” I said. “We’ll get you more information, Jim.”

“You do that.”

As the captain walked away, I called out to him, “Tell Wendy I said happy birthday. Hope you got her a good present.”

“Not the one she wanted, believe me.”

“And what’s that?” Knight asked.

“For me to retire from this shitty job.”

I smiled. “Maybe next year.”

Routman shook his head as he walked off. “I should be so goddamn lucky.”
